Good News

Pub Charities has advised that our application for funding for computers/equipment was approved!   A Donation in the sum of $15,062.00 has been award to SeniorNet Mangawhai.

File and Folder Management

One very important area of computing is good file and folder management and SeniorNet offers a very good four week course on this subject.  It is understood that a number of people in our area are very experienced in the use of computers but this is an area where they need some training.  Also we need our people who are new to computer learning to undertake this course as part of their development program. We are planning to commence instruction in the second four weeks of Term 5 commencing 10th November 2008.

Do contact Tony Cox to discuss this further and place your name on our enrolment list now.

Genealogy

We are now looking to the future.  SeniorNet Warkworth at present have a very interesting course on this subject and we at Mangawhai would like to bring one into our courses of interest in 2009.

So Who Are You?  What’s the fascination?  A curiosity as to why Grandpa never spoke about his family?  A yearning to know your ethnic roots?  One of your grandchildren starts asking questions because of a school project?  Whatever it is, by starting a search with your own family you will learn how to spot the significance of all the papers and memorabilia you are sure to find.

Genealogy is a natural use for your home PC and you will be introduced to the popular PAF files, search Internet sites, and use other methods to build your family tree.  It’s a fascinating world-wide hobby and can give great pleasure and enlightenment from the moment you commence.

Membership Fees $15 per person (until the end of the year), $30 per couple

Course Fees:  8 week course $45,  4 week course $25,  Workshops $5 per person

The idea of 'seniors' teaching each other the use of a computer started in the United States over 15 years ago.  A group of these seniors banded together to swap ideas and to learn about the new IT age from each other.  They did not want to be left out of this new domain associated with bright young people, often their own Grandchildren.  So a unique system of peer to peer computer learning was born.

It was quickly brought to New Zealand where the first group was formed in Nelson some 14 years ago.  The concept had much appeal and was quickly embraced by other groups around New Zealand.  There are now over 100 SeniorNets around the country, over one quarter of the World total.  Why?  Because at the outset strong sponsorship from Telecom, Microsoft, and various Community Trusts meant that these groups were well founded.  Each club is autonomous, not for profit, and operates with relatively simple rules - members must be over 50 years of age and must be involved principally to learn IT related subjects from each other.

SeniorNet Mangawhai has developed from an initiative of some members of SeniorNet Warkworth over 2007, and as of the date of writing this there are some 80 potential members.  SeniorNet Warkworth is. in the process of training tutors with the objective of local people being taught in Mangawhai by their own neighbours.  However all is on hold while we search for suitable premises.  So if you know of a site becoming available then please contact us as soon as possible.

SeniorNet Arrives In Mangawhai

At an inaugural public meeting held at the Senior Citizen’s Hall, Mangawhai Heads, on Friday, February 22, SeniorNet Mangawhai was formally established as an incorporated society by an enthusiastic group of 36 local “seniors”.  Rules were adopted and Neville Andrew was elected as Chairman, supported by a committee of six – Frank Arnott, Sheila Ballard, Pat Scott, Trewby Bull, Noel Howard, and Bernard Marshall.

This new organisation has been assisted by a small group of members from SeniorNet Warkworth with whom a close association has been formed through regular visits over recent months.  At this meeting, the Mangawhai group also decided to join over 85 other SeniorNets who make up the Federation of New Zealand SeniorNet Societies Inc. which will provide them with an even larger network of practical and financial assistance.

Those present were congratulated on their support and enthusiasm in embracing new and fast-changing computer technology in their senior years.  However, the new organisation is still looking for suitable secure premises to house a gift of computers from Warkworth.  It is hoped that learning can begin in early April.  The range of available classes will develop progressively through the months ahead.

If you are interested in learning about computer-training at SeniorNet, and are aged 50 years or older, contact Bev Bowmar, who is acting as Facilitator, on (09) 431 4071 for more information.

Do you live in the Mangawhai area?

Several SeniorNet Warkworth members are actually Mangawhai residents who commute the long distance in order to attend courses, workshops, and SIG meetings.  Our thanks go to those Warkworth tutors, committee members, and Mangawhai-resident members who have already been actively involved in shaping the likely future of SeniorNet Mangawhai.  We look ahead with much optimism to the emergence of a robust, enthusiastic, and well-founded society.

SeniorNet Warkworth has decided that for 2008 any member of SeniorNet Mangawhai will be able to attend teaching sessions at Warkworth as if they were members of SeniorNet Warkworth.  In other words you need only pay one membership subscription, not two (to either Warkworth or Mangawhai) to be counted as a member of  SeniorNet Mangawhai.

SeniorNet Mangawhai is officially launched

At a well attended meeting on Friday 28th March SeniorNet Mangawhai was welcomed into membership of the Federation of New Zealand SeniorNet Societies by Chairman and Northern Region representative Ian Turner. Also present and welcoming the new organisation were MP for Northland John Carter, and Mayor of Kaipara District Council Neil Tiller.  Chairman of SeniorNet Mangawhai Neville Andrew announced that premises had been secured for a temporary home and teaching would commence in Mangawhai as soon as local tutors were available.
